Human Metapneumovirus, which has been reported in an outbreak in China, is not a new virus. Its incidence is a common seasonal occurrence.
This was stated by Margaret Harris, a representative of the World Health Organization, during a briefing, as reported by CNN.
“The levels of respiratory infections in China are within normal limits. This is what we expect to see during the winter season,” Harris stated.
According to her, the burden on hospitals in China is lower than it was at the same time last year. No state of emergency has been declared in the country, nor have any emergency response measures been taken regarding these respiratory infections.
“As for human metapneumovirus, it is not a new virus. It was first identified in 2001. It has been present in the human population for a long time. It is a common virus that circulates in winter and spring,” the WHO representative added.
