Ukraine may face power outages of up to 20 hours a day. Energy experts have outlined the conditions under which such a scenario could occur.
This is reported by Politico.
The publication reminded that at the end of August, Russia launched over 200 missiles and drones targeting Ukraine's energy facilities. As a result, the enemy reduced electricity generation capacity by more than 9 GW. According to Gennady Ryabtev, the chief researcher at the National Institute for Strategic Studies of Ukraine and an energy market expert, this involves the loss of eight power plants and over 800 heating supply facilities.
Ryabtev noted that the most realistic scenario Ukrainians may encounter is the limitation of electricity supply for industry and households for 8-14 hours a day.
However, in the event of severe cold and new strikes, Ukraine could experience power outages of up to 20 hours a day. This opinion was expressed by Alexander Kharchenko, head of the Energy Industry Research Center and advisor to the Ukrainian government on energy issues.
It is worth noting that the acting head of "Ukrenergo," Alexey Brecht, believes that the winter of 2024-2025 will be one of the most challenging in the past three years.
Financial Times reported that Ukraine is engaging in preliminary negotiations with the aggressor country for a mutual cessation of attacks on energy infrastructure. However, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is unlikely to agree to a deal.
