Kyiv remains the only city in Ukraine where public transport stops during air raid alerts.
This information is reported by the activists of the NGO "Passengers of Kyiv".
As of the end of 2023, public transport was being halted during alerts in three cities of Ukraine – Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, and Ivano-Frankivsk.
However, according to activists, public transport in Khmelnytskyi and Ivano-Frankivsk has not stopped for several months. In Ivano-Frankivsk, for instance, transport is only halted by specific operational orders in cases of real high threat of shelling.
“All cities in Ukraine understand that public transport is critical infrastructure that must operate consistently and predictably. But not Kyiv… This creates transport issues for hundreds of thousands of surface transport and metro passengers. People are left shivering at bus stops in the cold or are forced to pay hundreds of hryvnias for taxis. Drivers are also suffering, unable to cross from the left bank to the right bank over the Darnytskyi Bridge. Dozens of successful petitions from Kyiv residents have been ignored by the so-called Defense Council of Kyiv, where 2/3 of the members are civilians subordinate to Klitschko,” the NGO noted.
It is worth recalling that the decision to halt public transport during alerts in Kyiv was made in August 2022. Since then, residents of Kyiv have signed numerous petitions requesting the cancellation of this rule, all of which have been rejected.
Moreover, there are no plans to build shelters at public transport stops in the capital at this time.
