Law enforcement officials have announced charges against the former head of the "Gas Transmission System Operator," who caused over 18 billion in losses to the state budget and fled abroad under the guise of a fictitious business trip.

This information was reported by the press service of the Kyiv police.

The police have not disclosed the name of the suspect, but the case materials clearly indicate that it concerns Serhiy Makohon.

"The investigation has established that in 2021, the monopolistic company, which transports natural gas to consumers in Ukraine and EU countries, under the official's leadership, generated a net profit of 20 billion UAH, 90% of which was supposed to be paid to the state budget as dividends," the statement reads.

However, according to police data, the suspect decided not to distribute the profits and not to allocate the company's funds to the state budget, resulting in material damage to the state amounting to over 18 billion UAH.

According to the report, after the supervisory board dismissed the violator in September 2022 due to unsatisfactory performance at the strategic enterprise, he submitted false information in an order regarding an alleged business trip to Vienna and left the country.

Currently, the former head of the "Gas Transmission System Operator" has been charged in absentia:

  • under part 2 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Improper performance by an official of their duties due to dishonest treatment, resulting in severe consequences for the state interests protected by law);

  • under part 1 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Preparation and issuance of deliberately false official documents by an official, and the inclusion of deliberately false information in official documents).

The suspect faces up to 5 years of imprisonment.

It is worth noting that Makohon was dismissed from his position in September 2022.
