The Brovary District Court has made a controversial ruling in the case of Volodymyr Maibozhenko — the former head of the Brovary District State Administration, who in April 2024, while under the influence of alcohol, hit four people at a pedestrian crossing, including a child.

Despite the severity of the crime, Maibozhenko was fined only 34,000 hryvnias and prohibited from driving for three years. However, the court decided to return the Volvo, which was impounded.

On April 26, 2024, Maibozhenko, with a blood alcohol level of 2.31 ppm (ten times the legal limit), ran a red light, veered off the road, and struck pedestrians at the crossing. Four individuals were injured, including a child.

President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the tragedy by dismissing Maibozhenko from his position as head of the Brovary District State Administration. However, justice for the victims seems to have remained only on paper.

The victims have repeatedly stated that since the accident, they have not received any financial assistance or compensation from Maibozhenko, despite his public promises to help.

In addition to the fine, the court ordered the former official to pay 31,432 hryvnias in court costs, but the issue of moral compensation for the victims remains unresolved.
