In Ukraine, 233 judges are officially listed in their positions but are not authorized to administer justice. Nevertheless, they continue to receive salaries from the budget.
As reported by journalists from "Sledstvo.Info," 483 judges have been appointed to courts that no longer exist.
Why can't they work?
The reasons vary:
- The five-year appointment term has expired.
- They have not taken the oath.
- They were not included in the court staff.
- They have reached the age of 65 (the maximum age limit).
How much do they earn?
The minimum salary for a judge is 100,000 UAH per month. The average pension for a judge is 107,000 UAH. Additional payments for experience, position, and access to state secrets can reach up to 120,000 UAH.
Question: why pay them if they aren't working?
While judges receive tens of thousands of hryvnias for not working, many real retirees who have worked their entire lives face survival challenges.
However, according to the law, even if a judge cannot make rulings, they still receive a salary. The reform of the judicial system in Ukraine has been discussed for many years.
In some countries, there are systems in place that help avoid "dead" vacancies among judges – where the process of dismissal or appointment is more stringent and transparent.
